Sydney Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery

Sydney Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery (SMIGS) is a centre of excellence, focused on optimising women’s health through education and research. The ethos of SMIGS is centred around delivering high quality, safe and minimally invasive surgical care. Patients benefit from an evidence-based approach tailored to their individual needs.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

SMIGS provides a comprehensive education and training program for future surgeons embarking on advanced training in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and robotic surgery.

This program includes a coveted two year SMIGS fellowship, accredited by the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society (AGES). The training program attracts local and international gynaecological trainees and specialists. It provides surgical exposure to the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques in gynaecological care. Fellows also participate in the unit’s activities including teaching and research. Furthermore, fellows attend and present at national and international conferences contributing to the latest evidence, improving surgical techniques that benefit our patients.

Our fellowship program includes the following Sydney hospitals:
The Sutherland Hospital, Kareena Private Hospital, St George Private Hospital and Hurstville Private Hospital.

EDUCATION

The SMIGS program incorporates The Sutherland Hospital where our fellows operate, review patients in clinic and lead departmental activities and audits.

SMIGS faculty practice at The Sutherland Hospital and are involved in education and teaching of medical students from the University of New South Wales and junior doctors.

SMIGS also holds annual basic and advanced workshops focusing on gynaecological surgery, anatomy and practical skills training. These workshops attract local, interstate, and international trainees and specialists looking to add to their surgical armamentarium.

RESEARCH

SMIGS research group and committee regularly conducts research activities and presents at national and international conferences.

Engaging with the latest research and evidence-based medicine ensures our ability to offer patients up to date advice regarding their care. This translates to a constantly evolving way of practice that puts patient care at the centre of our practice.
